Summer is almost here!  You know what that means… Outdoor Fun!  Here in Florida it means: 

  • Surfing
  • Going to the Beach
  • Boating
  • Swimming

If you’re like me, you’re thinking about trying to shape up a little before getting out in the sun. Here are some ways you can work on getting in shape for summer.

Losing Weight To Get In-Shape for Summer

If you’re overweight, making the decision to drop a few pounds is a fantastic step towards improving your health and wellness.  Start off slow and maybe get a friend and encourage each other to stay motivated. 

Losing weight is tough! If you want to lose weight to get in shape for summer, it is important to have realistic goals.  Healthy and sustainable weight loss typically rages between 1 and 5 pounds per month. This may vary depending on your Body Mass Index or BMI.  

There are plenty of fad diets that claim to help you lose weight quickly.  But, most of those diets are not sustainable.

Figure out your balance of macronutrients like:

  • Carbs
  • Fats 
  • Proteins

This a good place to start.  Our society tends to consume large amounts of carbohydrates in comparison to fats and proteins.  As a product of the 80s, I grew up believing eating fat was bad for me.  New research suggests that this is not necessarily true.  There is debate among dieticians and physicians about this topic so it is best to discuss it with your doctor or a licensed dietician before making major dietary changes.

How Can I Exercise to Get In-Shape for the Summer?

The quick answer is to pick an exercise and start. Ok, so maybe it’s not that easy. If you don’t exercise regularly it is important to work up gradually.  

It is important to incorporate:

  • Cardio
  • Strength Training
  • Stretching
  • Cross Training

A personal trainer is a great way to start.  Having a qualified trainer develop a program can help to make sure you have a program that is appropriate for your needs and goals.

When Should I Start Getting In Shape for Summer?

The quick answer is to start getting in shape for summer NOW!  Whether you are reading this in January or June, there is no time like the present.  The reason is that health and wellness should be a part of every season.  

Eating properly and exercising makes you feel better. There are numerous benefits to consider other than how you look in a swimsuit.  Benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle may include:

  • Better Self-Esteem
  • Better productivity at work
  • Better mental health
  • Better cardiovascular fitness
  • Better blood pressure
  • Better body image

How Do You Get In-Shape if You Have an Injury?

The quick answer is that there are many ways to get in shape, even with an injury. If you injure your shoulder or arm, most of the time, you can still perform exercise on the legs.  Riding a stationary bike is typically ok as long as it doesn’t bounce the injured area. 

Core exercises can be modified in most cases as well.
