Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint and many people do not seek medical treatment in the hopes that the pain will go away on its own. Although this can sometimes occur, if the pain persists beyond a few days or you experience any unusual symptoms, it is important see a physician to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms. With the right diagnosis, appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain 

If you have shoulder pain, some common causes include:

• Arthritis or Osteoarthritis
• Biceps Rupture of the Shoulder
• Bursitis/Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
• Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis
• Rotator Cuff Tear or Rupture
• Shoulder Dislocation or Subluxation
• Shoulder Separation or AC Joint Sprain

• Fractures to the Shoulder
• Torn Labrum

What Can Cause Shoulder Pain Without Having An Injury?

There are several shoulder conditions which can occur without a known injury.  The quick answer is shoulder pain can be caused by repetitive activities or overhead activities.  Bursitis, tendonitis and frozen shoulder are all examples of shoulder pain without an known injury.  JOI has skilled orthopedic shoulder physicians to give you a proper diagnosis, treatment plan and an excellent outcome.  We have the most experienced group of orthopedic shoulder surgeons in the state of Florida.

How Do I Get My Shoulder To Stop Hurting?

The easiest way to get your shoulder to stop hurting is to use ice and to rest.  Sometimes you might have to wear a sling to really get the muscles of the shoulder to rest and relax.  If the pain continues even after ice and resting, you should seek the advice of a Shoulder Orthopaedic Specialist.

Why Does My Shoulder Hurt When I Lift My Arm?

The quick answer is that this pain when lifting your arm probably indicates that you have a muscle strain or shoulder impingement.  The muscles of the shoulder, mainly the rotator cuff muscles, will hurt when you first try to lift your arm away from your body.  Pain with lifting your arm over your head could indicate you have shoulder impingement and possibly an issue with your glenoid labrum.  It is so important to get a proper diagnosis from an orthopedic physician.  If you need surgery for your shoulder, you are in good hands with JOI and Baptist Health.
