What is an Athletic Trainer? By: Michelle Duclos, MA, ATC, LAT Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute employs the largest number of athletic trainers in the Jacksonville area. What is an Athletic Trainer? Athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of injuries and illness in the athletic and physically active population. Athletic trainers are often referred to as “trainers,” leading a person to believe that athletic trainers are the same as personal trainers. There is, however, a big difference in the education, skill set, job duties and patients between an athletic trainer and a personal trainer.
ATC’s
Athletic trainers are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited athletic training education program. Many athletic trainers choose to continue their education, earning a master’s degree to supplement their knowledge and gain experience. They are also required to maintain current First Responder CPR/AED certifications. In Florida, athletic trainers are required to be licensed by the Department of Health as well. Once certified and licensed, athletic trainers must meet ongoing continuing education requirements to remain certified.
Athletic trainers must also work under the direction of a physician and within their state practice act. Athletic trainers have a background in: acute care and assessment of injuries and illnesses; exercise physiology; anatomy and physiology; kinesiology; biomechanics; nutritional aspects of injury, pathology of illness, pharmacology, psychosocial intervention and referral; strength training and reconditioning; therapeutic exercise and rehabilitative techniques; and therapeutic modalities. They possess the added skills necessary to evaluate injuries on the field and determine if the athlete needs to be transported to the emergency room, seen in the office by a doctor, or treated conservatively by the athletic trainer at the school.
JOI ATC’s
Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute provides athletic training services to several high schools in Jacksonville including Bishop Kenny, Episcopal, Bolles, Bishop Snyder, Paxon, Fernandina Beach, Hilliard and Atlantic Coast. JOI also provides athletic training services for the Jacksonville Armada and Florida State College at Jacksonville. These certified athletic trainers serve as a liaison between the athletes and the orthopedic physicians and serve to coordinate and administer the athlete’s care.
