What are the Olympics?
The Olympic Games are an international sporting event, held every four years. The ultimate goals are to promote human beings, through sport, and contribute to world peace. Summer Games and Winter Games are held 2 years apart. The ancient Olympics began about 2,300 years ago. They were originally held in Olympia in ancient Greece.
Are the 2021 Summer Olympics Canceled?
Despite the controversy, Japan’s Olympic Minister has said the Games would be held in 2021 at any cost. The torch relay has already begun and the athletes are getting ready. McBean said the IOC and the Tokyo organizing committee have been quoted they are doing everything they can to alleviate fears. Japan Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will start on 23 July 2021.
This year there will not be any international spectators permitted to attend. This means that U.S. athlete’s friends and family will not be allowed to have their biggest supporters there to watch them.
What Sports are in the Summer Olympics 2021?
The Olympic Committee has added six new sports to the list of the 28 existing events. With the inclusion of new sports, Olympic 2021 will have 18 new medal events, with 9 medals for each male and female athletes. Here is a list of some of the popular summer olympic sports you may watch this season:
- Aquatics (include swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo)
- Women’s Soccer
- Water Polo
- Men’s Basketball
- Team Volleyball

Jacksonville Olympic Swimming Gold Medalists
During the last Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Jacksonville had local athletes that won gold medals. Ryan Murphy, Caeleb Dressel and Joseph Schooling together won 6 gold medals in five events.
- Caeleb Dressel – Clay High School graduate won gold in men’s 4×100 relay and 4×100 medley relay.
- Ryan Murphy – Bolles School graduate won gold in men’s 100 and 200 meter backstroke, gold with U.S. team for 4×100 medley relay
- Joseph Schooling – Bolles School graduate won gold in men’s 100 meter butterfly
What are the Requirements to be in the Olympics?
Athletes must first abide by the Olympic Charter and follow the rules of the International Federation (IF) governing their sport. The IFs establish the rules and organize qualifying events, while the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the athlete’s country supports the athlete and is responsible for entering them for the Games.
There is no specific age limit for taking part in the Olympic Games. Athletes with dual citizenship can represent the country of their choosing, and athletes who gain new citizenship or wish to change their Olympic status can do so as long as at least three years have passed since they most recently competed for their previous. Athletes have competed as Independent Olympians at the Olympic Games for various reasons, including political transition, international sanctions, suspensions of National Olympic Committees, and compassion
What Types of Injuries are Most Common in the Olympics?
The most common injuries seen in the Olympics tend to be sprains, strains, fractures, and concussions. Most injuries are overuse injuries. There is not a major difference in injury in winter vs summer Olympics other than more severe injuries happening during high velocity sports such as snowboarding and alpine skiing. Other than cycling the summer Olympic sports tend to see more overuse injuries such as tendonitis type impairments.
