Tenosynovitis

What is Tenosynovitis?
Tenosynovitis is inflammation of a tendon and its synovium. The synovium is the lining of the sheath around the tendon. When the sleeve of the tissue, or sheath, around the tendon is inflamed, you have this diagnosis. When the tendon sheath becomes inflamed, it may get swollen, and fluid may build up, which may make your symptoms worse.
What Are The Most Common Causes?
It is usually caused by repeated motion which inflames one of the tendon sheaths.
Other causes of may include:
- Injury.
- Infection.
- Pressure on the tendon.
- Overuse.
Treatment for Tenosynovitis
The treatment of tenosynovitis focuses on reducing inflammation and pain. One strategy is to rest the effective area and sees all activities that may have caused the initial injury. Your physician may also recommend the use of a brace or splint to immobilize the affected area.
Your physician may also prescribe medications to decrease the inflammation of the tendon sheath. Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or injectable corticosteroids or other options as well.
Once the affected area heals, your physician may recommend exercises or physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles. Physical therapy is also a great way to learn the correct ergonomics so that this injury does not happen to you again.
