Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute Midlevel Providers

By Charles Wells, MBA, ATC, CST Practice Manager

Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute in addition to our 31 Board Certified Orthopedic Physicians have midlevel providers who conduct evaluations and assist in the treatment of our patients. These midlevel providers are known as Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners.  This article is to help you understand their role at JOI and how they work as a team with your JOI Physician.

Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) are recognized expert health care providers that have rigorous educational components emphasizing on patient education, preventative care, and chronic care management. Their level of medical training allows them to provide a wide range of patient care to the community in which they serve. These Midlevel Providers continuously promote quality health care that results in positive outcomes. Their medical expertise allows them to be a valuable member to the healthcare field and to the patients.

In our offices, these individuals work alongside their dedicated Physicians on a daily basis.  Together, they ensure that we provide the best care to our patients. While the PA and NP course load is set to be all encompassing, when they are brought into our practices they are working directly in the field of their physician. This approach allows for them to gain an expert understanding of the subject matter and expand their knowledge base. Some of our midlevel providers have been in the medical field for years prior to coming on board with us. Others have come on board directly after school and have been with us for over a decade.

NP & PA Statistics

A study conducted by Harris Poll in 2023 found that 90% of Americans say Physician Assistant’s improve access to care.  They also make it easier to get an appointment. Additionally, 93% of patients said that PA’s add value to healthcare teams.   Additionally, another 89% state that they improve health outcomes.

These statistics can be inferred that Nurse Practitioners add the same value and improve both access to care as well as health outcomes. The American Academy of Physician Associates and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners indicate that over 50% of adults wait more than a week for an appointment and on average adults spend around 8 hours a month coordinating health care. With knowing these statistics, let our PA’s and NP’s assist in getting you in earlier if one of our Physicians is unavailable. As an organization we value your time and want to extend this as a solution to any potential barrier of entry when getting in to see one of our healthcare experts.

New to JOI: You can now schedule a follow up appointment and cancel appointments through the JOI Portal.
