What is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is a fun sport that is played with a flying disc and a metal basket. The area and works their way down the fairway. The goal is putting the disc inside the elevated metal basket. Once the disc is placed inside the metal basket, the hole is complete. The sport is very similar to golf, rather no clubs or golf balls are used during the game.
Disc golf started in the 1970’s. It was invented by “Steady” Ed Headrick. Disc golf is growing in popularity. 8 to 12 million Americans have played disc golf. Over 500,000 people play disc golf regularly. There are over 7,000 courses in the United States and over 10,000 worldwide.
Why is Disc Golf Popular?
Disc golf is popular because it is inexpensive. Disc costs prices from $10 to $25. Most of the public courses are free to play. Disc golf can give a full-body workout, upper and lower body. It is a fun sport for a family to get together and play without a lot of equipment. It can be played by people of all ages.
What are Common Disc Golf Injuries?
- Knee Pain – Sprain, strains, and muscle-related injuries are commonly seen in athletes who participate in disc golf. The risk comes from the pivoting movements that happen at the knee with throwing a disc.
- Elbow Pain
- Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis) – Occurs due to the frequent repetitive backhand disc throwing movements. It can be caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. Wearing a tennis elbow brace can help alleviate pain.

- Golfer’s Elbow (medial epicondylitis) – Occurs due to frequent repetitive forehand disc throwing movements. Golfers Elbow causes pain where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. A golfer’s elbow brace can help alleviate pain from golfer’s elbow.
