What is Medical Massage?

Medical massage is an outcome-based treatment that focuses on a medical need. Research studies have shown that Medical Massage Therapy is beneficial in the treatment of multiple medical conditions. Medical Massage Therapists work directly with Physical Therapists and Physicians in coordinating a patient’s care. This therapeutic kind of massage entails more focused work on your body’s soft tissue — the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that move and support your body. Sports medicine massage can help athletes return to play stronger and healthier.

What is the Difference Between a Medical Massage and Massage Therapy?

Most forms of massage are considered therapeutic because of the increase of circulation and the calming effect on the nervous system, medical massage focuses on a particular problem area or injury.  Most spa massages are done over the entire body using slow, broad strokes. Instead of massaging the entire body, medical massage therapy tends to focus on a particular area. Medical massage will only treat the area, causing issues while utilizing multiple modalities such as Neuromuscular, Deep Tissue, Active Stretching, and Myofascial Release to reach the specified goals.

Medical Massage Therapy for Chronic Pain

Massage therapy can help increase the blood flow and flush out any excess fluids built up in the soft tissue. Multiple studies have shown that medical massage therapy can reduce muscle tension, stress, and pain. Medical Massage helps with relief for patients with:

  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Work-related injuries

Our licensed Massage Therapists offer medically-directed massage services, including those specifically designed to focus on soft tissue, spine-specific, and sports-related injuries. We work directly with JOI’s Physical Therapists in coordinating your care at our Spine Center.

What are the Benefits of Medical Massage?

  • Decreases pain and inflammation
  • Helps relieve nerve compression
  • Increases flexibility and range of motion
  • Improves circulation
  • Calms and soothes the nervous system
  • Ease muscle tension

Keep in mind that even though medical massage therapy can be helpful, it is not meant to replace regular medical care. Our physicians and massage therapists will be happy to explain the benefits you can expect from adding massage therapy to your healthcare regimen.
