What is a Revision for a Total Knee Replacement
One of the most common and typically successful orthopedic procedures is the total knee replacement. There are different signs of when someone should have total knee replacement.
How Long Does a Knee Replacement Last?
While knee replacements should usually last about 20 years there are several factors that could change this timetable. Things that play a big role in this include a patient’s:
- Weight
- Overall health
- Level of activity

However, in the cases that don’t last as long as planned there are options for the patient to receive a revision of a total knee replacement. You and your doctor both could decide that the best plan of action would be to undergo a Revision Total Knee Replacement. The unfortunate part of the revision is that this surgery will be longer and more complex than the initial replacement. The need for revision could stem from a few different reasons.
What is the Most Common Reason for Knee Revision Surgery?
The most common would be loosening or damage to the components of the prosthesis. Other reasons for the need for a revision for a total knee replacement would be:
- Infection of the joint
- Instability
- Stiffness
- Fracture
Revision Total Knee Replacement Procedure
During the procedure your orthopedic surgeon will assess what components from the original surgery need to be removed. First, the implants are inspected, and the damaged ones removed. Then, the surgeon will prepare the bone surface for the revision of the implant. In some cases, a bone graft may be used to help rebuild the knee. Once the implant has been placed in your knee, the doctor will be able to test the motion of the joint.
Revision Total Knee Replacement Recovery
When beginning the recovery process for your revision there are a few different options that could be combined such as pain management and physical therapy. During physical therapy, your physical therapist will monitor your progress with things such as range of motion, strength, and balance. They will decide what specific exercises will be best suited for you and your recovery. During these sessions you will work towards regaining the ability to perform your usual daily activities without any issue.
