Stem Cell Therapy
There continues to be advances in the world of regenerative medicine. With these improvements options for treatment of orthopedic injuries besides surgery continue to improve and show promise. One of these options is Autologous Stem Cell Therapy. The procedure for Autologous Stem Cell Therapy consists of the Physician aspirating, which means removing with a needle, cells from the hip, concentrating them, and delivering them back into the body in the area of damage or injury to aid in natural healing.
What is a Stem Cell?
The quick answer, a mesenchymal stem cell is a primitive cell with the ability to self-replicate, differentiate into multiple tissues (bone, cartilage, muscle, fat), Fight apoptosis (cell death), and reduce inflammation.
What are Adult Stem Cells?
Adult stem cells are early stage cells that are capable of developing into other types of cells and hold the potential to regenerate damaged tissues under the right conditions.
What can Stem Cell Therapy treat?
Autologous Adult Stem Cells (ASCS) are found in the adult human body tissues such as bone marrow and fat. These stem cells differ from Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) in that they are not donated from in vitro fertilizations, but harvested from the body of the patient being treated. Therefore infection risk is not as high and it does not raise some of the ethical concerns there may from harvesting cells from in vitro fertilizations. ASCS can be used to treat many different types of chronic and/or degenerative conditions such as:
Shoulder: · Partial rotator cuff tears · Labral tears · And mild to moderate osteoarthritis |
Knee: ·Osteoarthritis · Partial ligament tears of the ACL and/or PCL · Partial meniscal tears · Augmented ACL and/or PCL reconstruction |
Hip: · Osteoarthritis · Labral tears · Articular cartilage injuries · Congenital deformities of the hip |
Foot: · Mild to moderate osteoarthritis · Tendon inflammation · Partial Achilles tendon tear · Muscle sprains/strains |
Back: · Discogenic back pain · Facet arthritis · Degenerative disc disease |
Does insurance cover Stem Cell Therapy?
Although stem cell therapy has been successfully used for some time now, the practice of using them in orthopedic procedure is new. Typically insurance will not cover stem cell therapy for this reason. Cost of stem cell therapy may vary based on procedure.
