Custom Made Spica Splint for the Thumb
Custom made Thumb Spica splints, commonly billed under L code L3808, are an important component of Hand Therapy. Doctors and hand therapists will commonly prescribe the use of these splints for injuries. JOI has Certified Hand Therapists that have obtained special training in splint fabrication.
Thumb Splints for Thumb Fractures
In acute conditions and fractures of the thumb, immobilization or resting splints can be used. The splints allow inflamed tissue to rest and to provide protection for healing fractures, repaired tendons, nerves and soft tissues. In addition, a hand therapist will make a custom thumb spica splint. Your therapist will explain specific wearing instructions to you. Most importantly, you should follow your therapist’s instructions for proper use of your splint to prevent re-injury.
Custom Made Thumb Spica Splints
Custom made thumb spica splints are orthopedic devices designed for thumb injuries, inflammation, pain or deformities. They can be custom tailored to various sizes, styles and configurations to address each individual’s specific requirements. A Certified Hand Therapist has the ability to custom make a splint to your specific needs. Custom made thumb spica splints can be modified as needed.
Depending on the patient’s specific condition, thumb splints can be static or dynamic. Splints can support the thumb only or extend to the forearm to provide support for both the thumb and wrist. Thumb splints keep the thumb immobilized while still allowing the fingers to move.
Thumb spica splints will support joints that are painful or unstable due to arthritis or soft tissue injury. Also, wearing thumb spica splints for day-to day activity will protect the joint and improve the function of the hand.
