What is an E-Scooter?

The quick answer is that an E-scooter is an electrical scooter for commuting around town.  The world is moving towards being more energy-efficient.  Electric scooters, or E-scooters, are becoming more popular in cities across the country.

Recently, E-Scooters came to Jacksonville, and with it, greater ease of getting around the city. Simply put, e-scooters are a public means of transportation where anyone with a couple of dollars can rent a scooter to get to their destination. These e-scooters can then be dropped off at any other participating location in the city for convenience.

How Do You Rent an E-Scooter In Jacksonville?

The quick answer is to rent an e-scoot from one of the corrals, all it takes is $1 to unlock the e-scooter from the corral. After that, it’s 30 cents per minute to ride and get where you need to go. This program was authorized under a one-year contract with the city and operated within a “dockless mobility zone” where pedestrians can roam and make their point-to-point trips.

Common E-Scooter Injuries

E-Scootering Downtown

The most common injuries seen with the addition of e-scooters include:

  • Closed head injuries, including concussions
  • Bruises
  • Lacerations
  • Broken bones

E-Scooters are new in JAX.  So far, JSO has a few traffic violations associated with E-Scooters.  Thankfully, there haven’t been any recorded injuries to date.

Other cities have had some injuries but the number of serious injuries is low.

Preventing E-Scooter Injuries

E-Scooter Injuries Can Be Prevented

The best way to prevent injury while using these scooters around town is helmets and other protective gear.

E-scooters are easy to access.  This may allow people to assume that they are not dangerous.

The e-scooter vendors each have a safety video. One of the vendors, LINK, offers a $5 credit if you watch their safety video prior to riding.

Unfortunately, there is no national law or regulation regarding wearing a helmet while riding any scooter, so it is up to the individual to protect themselves knowing the risk of injury.

The E-scooters are a great way to promote active commuting, but they should not be viewed as toys. To continue to succeed overall, improved rider safety measures and regulations are clearly needed.
