Anterior Hip Replacement

MCMarilyn’s Story

“The second time, I stayed the night after surgery and then went home — and I could walk right away, without a limp.”

Marilyn Cicciu had both hips replaced. Her second surgery, performed at Baptist Beaches by Drs. John Von Thron and Dale Whitaker using the anterior approach, meant just one night in the hospital and immediate walking — compared with five nights and six weeks of restrictions the first time. “My hip replacement eliminated my pain, and I was up and walking around immediately. I’m just delighted.”

The anterior approach to the hip has been used for at least 10 years in the U.S. and has numerous benefits. As Dr. Whitaker explains, the patient lies flat on a special table, making it easier to use X-ray for precise component placement. Dr. Von Thron adds it’s less invasive — smaller incisions, performed with greater precision and safety.
