Dr. Gregory Smith, Orthopaedic Surgeon

 

Dr. Smith is from Greensboro, NC and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Wake Forest University. He completed his Orthopedic Surgical residency with the University of Florida.  With concentrations at The Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, as well as The Nemours Children’s Clinic and Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital. After completing his Orthopedic Surgical residency, Dr. Smith then served as the Assistant Team Physician with the University of Tennessee in Knoxville while completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Nassau County/Amelia Island

Dr. Smith then moved to Amelia Island and since 1997.  He has combined his love of sports and medicine in his Orthopedic Surgery-Sports Medicine practice in Fernandina. He and his wife Paulette have two children. His daughter Peyton graduated from Fernandina Beach High and attends the University of Florida, and his son Parker currently attends Fernandina Beach High.  He hopes to someday follow in his father’s footsteps and become a physician as well. Dr. Smith is an avid sports enthusiast and takes interest in golf, basketball and weight training.  He serves as the Assistant Basketball Coach for the junior varsity team of Fernandina Beach High School.

Dr. Smith’s training not only with the University of Florida, but also the Mayo Clinic and The Nemours Children’s Clinic & Wolfsons Children’s Hospital gives him a wide range of experience to treat patients of all ages. Through his involvement in youth sports, Dr. Smith feels that he can help stress to young athletes the importance of taking care of their bodies, as well as ways to avoid injury.

In addition to the young athlete, Dr. Smith also thoroughly understands the weekend warrior mentality and their drive to return to the field of play. Dr. Smith also takes a very personal approach with his management of patient care and strives to provide the highest level of orthopedic care possible. All treatment options including surgical and non-surgical are discussed, as well as management to avoid problems in the future. Given his commitment to physical fitness, Dr. Smith also is able to speak with patients firsthand about the benefits of proper diet and exercise. Dr. Smith has years of experience in fracture care, shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff and other shoulder related injuries, as well knee arthroscopy and ligament reconstructions. In addition to sports medicine related injuries, Dr. Smith also provides the highest quality of care for the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, as well as the hip, knee, ankle and foot.

Sports Medicine

Dr. Smith has served as the Team Physician for Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Hilliard, West Nassau, Charlton County and Camden County High School. He has been a volunteer coach for many youth sports through the YMCA, and is a Physician Member for USA Amateur Boxing.

Dr. Smith has also served as the Chief of Surgery for Baptist Medical Center Nassau, as well as being a member of the Board of Directors for Baptist Nassau. He was honored when he was asked to become the anchor member of the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute at Nassau. Dr. Smith has been instrumental in expanding Orthopedic Surgery within Nassau County.
