Metatarsalgia Defined

By Jon Stiffler PTA/Sports Center Manager

Metatarsalgia Definition?

The quick answer to this question is a pain in the ball of your foot. The pain can be caused by a number of different reasons. The most common reason for this condition is wearing shoes that are too tight or too narrow.  This can easily be fixed by discontinuing the use of these shoes.  But, often the pain and irritation can remain.  It is important to decrease the inflammation with the use of ice and trying to stay off of the foot as much as possible.

Another cause for metatarsalgia are shoes which do not have good arch support for the foot.  It is important to have shoes that are comfortable and shoes that support your arch of the foot.  This is really important for people who are on their feet for the majority of their day.
