A hip stem recipient is a patient that has elected to go through a total hip replacement. During a total hip replacement, and orthopedic surgeon will insert a new hip stem, also known as a femoral stem. This is because the stem is inserted into the femur and functions as the “ball” in the ball and socket joint of the hip.

A hip stem recipient is usually a total hip replacement patient.
