What is a Bunion?
A bunion is a deformity in the foot characterized by inward deviation of the first metatarsal bone and an outward deviation of the big toe usually resulting in enlarged tissue at the base of the big toe. Bunions can be treated conservatively via physical therapy. Physical therapists can help the bunion by analyzing your footwear and assessing your biomechanics and coming up with an individualized treatment program to assess your specific needs. Treatment components may consist of orthotic recommendations, gait training, modalities for pain and swelling, stretching and strengthening exercises for the foot and entire lower extremity, and activity specific training. If the conservative therapy does not work, surgical intervention is an option.
