Kevin M. Kaplan, MD

Dr. Kevin Kaplan, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Kaplan graduated from Tulane University (New Orleans, LA) with a Bachelor of Science.  He majored in cell and molecular biology and was distinguished as Summa Cum Laude with Honors.   Dr. Kaplan was Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of numerous National Honor Societies. He attended New York University School of Medicine (New York, NY) where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine.  He was distinguished in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

Dr. Kaplan completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases (New York, NY).  He was chosen as an Executive Chief Resident, contributed over twenty orthopaedic publications, earned research awards.  Dr. Kaplan received specialized training in orthopaedic trauma surgery at Seattle’s Harborview Hospital.  He completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (Los Angeles, CA). During his fellowship, he assisted the head team physician in the orthopaedic care of the 2009 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, and Loyola Marymount University. Working among innovators in the field of sports medicine, Dr. Kaplan has been trained in cutting-edge arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.  As well as in joint preserving and reconstructive procedures of the shoulder and elbow.

He has presented his research at numerous national meetings and he is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.  Dr. Kaplan is a fellow-member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Dr. Kaplan recently presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons National Meeting on new technology regarding rotator cuff tears in addition to a study regarding shoulder strength and range of motion in high school pitchers.

Team Physician 

He is Head Team Physician for the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars and Head Team Physician for the Jacksonville Sharks, and works with Jacksonville University and Atlantic Coast High School. On October 9, he served as event physician for the NBA Orlando Magic vs. New Orleans Pelicans preseason game held at Veterans Memorial Arena in downtown Jacksonville. In March 2010, he was Head Physician for the 2011 AT&T American Cup gymnastics competition in Jacksonville, FL .

Chris Garman, PA

Christopher Garman, PA-C, Physician Assistant

A native of Jacksonville, Florida.  Chris was a competitive athlete throughout high school in football and weightlifting.  Chris’s journey in Sports Medicine began at Florida State University where he completed his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, graduating in 2009.  Chris went on to complete his master’s degree as a Physician Assistant at Nova Southeastern University in 2011.  Following his love for sports, Chris joined Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute in 2012.   Since 2014, Chris has served as a Physician Assistant with Dr. Kaplan. Chris loves serving the Jacksonville community through his volunteer work at local high school football games.  Chris assists Dr. Kaplan with on field coverage for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  He provides care for all patients working in the clinic and assisting in surgery.  At Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, Chris works with his team to provide patients with care that is rooted in compassion, integrity, and excellence.  He ensures a personalized touch by building relationships with his patients, ensuring they feel comfortable and supported throughout their orthopedic journey.

Chris finds joy in spending quality time with his wife, 3 children, and 2 dogs, especially on the beach or watching/cheering for his favorite teams Atlanta Braves, Florida State University, and most importantly the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mike McCarthy, PA

Mike McCarthy, PA-C, Physician Assistant

Michael McCarthy has been a practicing Certified Physician Assistant specializing in orthopedics since 2015.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in Psychology and his Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Eastern Virginia Meical School in Norfolk, VA.  He is originally from Southeast Virginia and practiced as an Orthopedic PA in Williamsburg Virgina for 6 years.  He has also practiced in Washington State and Idaho assisting with sports medicine care with athletes at Washington State University and the University of Idaho.  PA McCarthy works with Dr. Kaplan’s team providing full orthopedic care in the clinic, first assisting in surgery, and providing preoperative and postoperative care for surgical patients.  He has previous clinical experience in foot and ankle surgery, total joint replacements, and has previously supervised and administered care in an orthopedic express care clinic.   He also has specialized training in wound care and ultrasound guided injections.  PA McCarthy has been a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants since 2015.  He moved to the Jacksonville area in 2023 with his wife, two children, and Australian Sheppard and is excited to continue providing high quality orthopedic in his community.
