Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Over 30 million people suffer with joint pain and arthritis.  The pain is often debilitating and can keep you from staying active and make daily activities nearly impossible. Injections can be a conservative option for easing your joint pain and getting you moving again..

JOI Physicians use a variety of Hyaluronic Acid injections. Hyaluronic acid injections are an early intervention treatment for patients who suffer from Osteoarthritis. The knee gel which is injected is a natural supplement for the synovial fluid of the joint. The injection works by acting like a lubricant and shock absorber in the knee joint and helps the knee to work properly. The goal is to decrease pain so that the patient is able to return to an active lifestyle.

These injections are very important to patients who cannot have surgery due to other medical conditions.  To read more about the conservative approach, please read Avoiding a knee replacement.

Common brands of hyaluronic acid injections used by JOI physicians include:

  • Euflexxa
  • Hyalgan
  • Orthovisc
  • Gel One
  • Synvisc.

It may take more than one series of injections to make the knee pain go away. Typically you will receive a series of injections one week apart for a total of 3 or 4 injections.  However, some newer injections are only 1 injection.  It is important to rest after the injection.  There is no need to suffer from the effects of Osteoarthritis.

Common Side Effects

Some common side effects include:

  • Pain in the joints or the feeling like the joint is full.
  • Difficulty with moving
  • Muscle stiffness or pain
  • Allergic Reaction

The other difficulty is that the particular medicine may not be covered by your insurance.  Most of these injections now require a pre-authorization.  For more information, please give your physician a call or schedule an office visit at 904-564-2000.
