Dr. Manuel graduated summa cum laude from Boston University School of Medicine (Boston, MA). She interned in general surgery and completed her orthopedic surgical residency at Brown University (Providence, RI). Dr. Manuel received her fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma surgery also at Brown, followed by orthopaedic hand surgery fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (Rochester, MN). While at Brown, she received the prestigious Haffenreffer House Staff Recognition Award; the Diane Radkowski Award as the outstanding female student pursuing a career in the surgical fields; and the AMWA Outstanding Women in Medicine Award, awarded to the top 10% of the graduating medical school class.

Prior to coming to JOI, Dr. Manuel was investigating the biomechanical strength of simulated partial scaphoid fractures in cadavers and the functional outcome and clinical experience with Total Wrist Arthroplasty at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Hand Division, Mayo Clinic in Rochester. At Brown, she was investigating the long-term functional and physical limitations from shoulder adhesive capsulitis treated with physical therapy; the histology and immunohistochemistry of debrided tissue during an arthroscopic elbow lateral epicondylar release; and the anatomic practice of elbow arthroscopy (specially for medial epicondylar release). She has been published in a variety of journal publications, taught at various teaching conferences, and is presently a Candidate Member for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Manuel is board certified.
