JOI Foundation News

Last July, Brianna Taylor (JOI Rehab intake coordinator) lost her younger sister, Sarah, to cancer. Sarah loved Stuffed Animals! To honor Sarah on what would have been her 21st birthday, JOI staff members were invited to bring in stuffed animals to donate to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital in Sarah’s honor. The response was OVERWHELMING !!💕 Thank you, Brianna, for letting your JOI family be a part of honoring your sister in this sweet way!

The Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute Physicians and ATC’s also donate countless hours of time in our Sports Medicine Program.  Through this program they cover local high school and middle school athletics and other community athletic events.  We are so proud of our Sports Medicine volunteers who give their time back to the community in which we live.   It is important to volunteer your time to a cause that you believe in!  We could always use some help!

The JOI Foundation

The JOI Foundation Needs You!

When you join with us, you make a difference in our community and help to improve the overall well being of thousands of individuals in the North Florida area. The JOI Foundation’s goal is to assist others with the help of generous financial donors & through countless volunteer hours.  We choose these charities because we believe that we can make a positive impact and to make a meaningful change.  100% of funds are used to provide support for outreach programs which benefit individuals and groups in need of services, equipment, supplies, athletics and basic daily necessities such as food and clothing.

Who We Serve

JOI employees through our foundation, pay for meals at the Sulzbacher Center.  Employees also volunteer their time to go over to the center and actually prepare and cook the meal.  JOI Physicians and Staff members also volunteer at the Hearts to Soles Event at the Sulzbacher Center on  November 23, 2019.  JOI will be collecting socks to provide them with the shoes which are donated for this event.

The JOI Foundation recently added the Patrick Heinold Foundation as one of our beneficiaries.  Teen suicide is on the rise across the nation.  The data appeared in The Journal of Pediatrics, and comes from poison control centers. A study finds the rate of poisoning attempts more than doubled among boys and girls.

There is no single cause to suicide. It most often occurs when stressors exceed current coping abilities of someone suffering from a mental health condition.

JOI Spring Donation Drive – Humane Society

In honor of National Pet Month (May), our JOI offices and rehab centers participated in a donation drive. Our challenge was to see how many items they could donate to the Humane Society. Out of 4 teams, there were almost 500 items donated!

The donations included cat food, dog food, cat litter, food feeders, and much more! Team Kibble Krew at JOI San Marco won by donating more than 200 items. However, the other team’s Whisker Warriors, Smitten Kittens, and Kibbles n Bits also did an incredible job donating many items as well! Thank you to all the JOI Staff Members who participated in this challenge! You saved so many animals’ lives this month!

You can still collect items for the Humane Society and drop them off at their facility. Items that are always needed include:

This is National Suicide Prevention Week

This National Suicide Prevention Week, have a #RealConvo about mental health! Whether that means active listening or talking through it. Just being there for someone is also important.

It’s time to shift the culture and have an open and honest conversation about #mentalhealth. Have you had a #RealConvo today? The JOI Foundation supports the Patrick Heinold Foundation. The goal is to get Mental Health First Aid Training in Every High School and Junior High School in our area!

If you’re unsure of how to reach out to a friend that’s struggling, here are some quick pointers you can use for having a #RealConvo or how-to-start-and-continue-a-conversation-about-mental-health-a-real conversation.https://afsp.org/story/how-to-start-and-continue-a-conversation-about-mental-health-a-realconvo-guide-fr

The Jacksonville Humane Society

The number of kittens arriving at Jacksonville’s shelters is reaching record levels, and we cannot save them all without your support. Year to date, more than 1,600 kittens have come to the doorstep of our local shelters. The
good news is … you can help! Here is an easy option to help kittens in need:
1) Become a foster parent to orphaned kittens! Tiny kittens are too small and need the extra love and
attention that only a foster home can provide. Click here to learn how a few weeks can save multiple lives. ‘
Also, The JOI Foundation is a sponsor for the Jacksonville Humane Society. Please look for our monthly posts on social media to adopt the JOI Foundation Sponsored Pet! We will pay for the adoption fee!

About Patrick Heinold

Patrick Heinold was 17 years old when he took his life on February 4th, 2017. He was the last person anyone expected to fall to suicide, as he was everyone’s best friend and favorite person, and thrived an all that he did. Patrick was a member of the Bolles’ Men’s Varsity Basketball Team and also participated in band and Junior Mentors while attending The Bolles School as a junior. Patrick was a member of the Parking Ministry at Christ’s Church and was an active member of Young Life. Patrick’s legacy will forever live on in how he treated others, befriended everyone he met, and embodied Christ in everything he did. We will miss and love you forever Patrick.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Through a program by Baptist Health, JOI Certified Athletic Trainers and personnel from Bishop Kenny High School participated in a two day program for Youth Mental Health First Aid. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children ages 10-24. Each day in the U.S. there is an average of 5,240 attempts of suicide for children in grades from 7-12. The goal of the program is to train personnel to be able to give first aid for those children who are in need of professional help.

Similar to the American Red Cross First Aid Certificate for physical injuries. The program is based on breaking down the barriers and stigma which are attached to mental health. Certified Athletic Trainers normally are on the high school campuses each and every day for physical injuries. This is the next step in the recognition of mental health illnesses and the ability to get professional help for these students in need. In addition, each person who finishes the program, will receive a certificate for Youth Mental Health First Aid. Continue reading
