Through a program by Baptist Health, JOI Certified Athletic Trainers and personnel from Bishop Kenny High School participated in a two day program for Youth Mental Health First Aid. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children ages 10-24. Each day in the U.S. there is an average of 5,240 attempts of suicide for children in grades from 7-12. The goal of the program is to train personnel to be able to give first aid for those children who are in need of professional help. Similar to the American Red Cross First Aid Certificate for physical injuries. The program is based on breaking down the barriers and stigma which are attached to mental health. Certified Athletic Trainers normally are on the high school campuses each and every day for physical injuries. This is the next step in the recognition of mental health illnesses and the ability to get professional help for these students in need. Each person who finishes the program, will receive a certificate for Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Minimalist running shoes were the norm in the 1970’s, but as running shoe technology progressed, stability and cushioning shoes were developed to allow more runners to be able to run longer distances. Shoes became more and more cushioned and more and more stable. This trend continued until 2009 when Christopher McDougal’s book “Born to Run” was published and spent several years on the New York Time’s Best Sellers List. Around the same time, Vibram introduced the “Five-Finger” running shoe which allowed the feeling of barefoot running, but still protected the soles of the feet. The running shoe industry soon responded to the demand and most running shoe companies released “minimalist” running shoes. Many runners have felt that using these shoes has improved their running form in reducing heel strike and allow a more efficient running pattern.

On Saturday, JOI staff had a busy day with their role in the Healthy Kids Day and First Coast Kids Triathlon down at EverBank Field. We played a role in recovery for participants in the event with stretching, use of the foam roller, and massage. Also we were there to educate the youth and their parents on how they can stay healthy and active. And of course, if injury does happen to them, we made sure that they were aware of who we are, where we are located, and how we can help them.
There were 29 people in attendance for his talk which focused on low back pain. The audience was very in tune with the treatment options, especially when there were non-surgical options presented for them. Just another example of JOI helping folks get "back" in the game.
